re: Presentation ⇢ a collage + identity workshop w/ the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center

AADHum, NarraSpaceXR, Soft Souls Foundry, and MITH joined the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center to host re: Presentation ⇢, a collage and identity workshop that invited participants to think critically and creatively about how representation is constructed and reclaimed.

At the heart of the workshop was the work of Domitila de Paulo, a Brazilian artist known for transforming magazine fragments into vibrant, layered collages that center Black figures and experiences. Her practice provided both a visual and conceptual foundation for the session, prompting participants to consider how images circulate, who they privilege, and how they might be reassembled to tell different stories.

Led by Yereni Butcher '26, the workshop guided attendees through the process of building their own collages from a variety of materials. Participants cut, arranged, and recombined images, experimenting with color, composition, and juxtaposition to construct pieces that reflected their identities, perspectives, and imaginative visions.

Throughout the session, the space encouraged both reflection and play. Conversations emerged around visibility, cultural memory, and the power of remix as a tool for reframing dominant narratives. By the end of the workshop, participants left not only with completed works to take home, but also with new ways of thinking about authorship, representation, and the possibilities embedded in reusing and recontextualizing visual media.

The workshop offered a hands-on environment where art, critical thought, and community engagement came together through the simple but powerful act of making.
