The end of 2022 was a time of immense win and loss in BlackDH. In October it was amazing to see P. Gabrielle Foreman named to the 2022 class of MacArthur fellows.

Foreman is Paterno Family Professor of American Literature and Professor of African American Studies and History at Penn State University, and also co-founder and co-director of the Colored Conventions Project (CCP). The Colored Conventions Project is an expansive Black digital humanities research and teaching project focused on recovering histories of Black political organizing in the nineteenth century. Congratulations Dr. Foreman! 

We also send a shout out to Eva Hageman, whose video essay "Shiplap" has been named a 2022  best video essay by the British Film Institute. Dr. Hageman is an assistant professor in the department of American Studies at UMD. Learn more about the BFI honor here, or watch the video, here.

The past year was also, for so many, a time of great loss. In December 2022, former AADHum faculty assistant Tatiana Benjamin passed away. Prior to her tenure at AADHum, where her research centered on matters of institutional assessment of Black DH work, Dr. Benjamin earned a doctorate from UMD's Department of American Studies. In fall 2021, she was hired as an assistant professor of Justice Studies at James Madison University— a wonderful fit for her work on the invisibility of Black immigrants in policy and advocacy conversations in the United States.
