African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities (AADHum) Initiative
The African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities (AADHum) Initiative at the University of Maryland is seeking a new colleague who shares our commitment to creating a space for intersectional digital humanities scholarship attuned to Black studies in order to help us build on the successes of the past three years.
Join the leadership team of the AADHum Initiative, with a portfolio focused on teaching and mentoring students (undergraduate and graduate). We are seeking someone who can think creatively about teaching and learning across different settings and cadences from formal classroom instruction to extracurricular and self-paced experiences. The successful candidate will be someone who can demonstrate how their skills and experience will help advance AADHum’s mission to build a space—physical, virtual, and affective—that explores what happens when questions of Black history and culture are situated at the leading edge of digital humanities inquiry.

This is a full-time, 12-month, professional track faculty position. Professional track faculty at Maryland have opportunities for promotion and are part of shared governance at the department, college, and university level. This position will be appointed in the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH). As with all professional track appointments in MITH, the position includes time and other professional development resources for research, and the maintenance of a personal research agenda is encouraged. Initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon funding. The preferred start date for this position is no later than August 1, 2019.
The salary for this position is $85,000.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the AADHum leadership team and contribute to strategic planning, leadership, and administration. This includes participating in the recruitment and hiring of project staff, faculty, and research assistants as well as in the conception, writing, and leadership of future grant proposals generated by MITH.
- Serve as instructor of record and be responsible for successfully designing courses at the undergraduate or graduate level that fit within the scope and ethos of AADHum.
- Advise on the development of a new First-Year Innovation and Research Experience (FIRE) stream course as part of AADHum’s teaching and learning portfolio
- Manage the AADHum Teaching and Learning Lab space and associated budget
- Develop undergraduate and graduate mentoring and advising programs for students engaged in Black DH courses.
- Contribute to shared teaching and advising responsibilities for a research seminar course based around the activities of the AADHum Scholars program (https://aadhum.umd.edu/scholars/)
- Maintain an active research program
This position may supervise exempt staff, graduate assistants, or hourly student employees.
- Demonstrated research or teaching experience in African American history and culture
- Ph.D. in a relevant humanities or social sciences discipline or equivalent terminal degree, with at least two years experience in undergraduate instruction
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital humanities methods, tools, and platforms
- Demonstrated success in self-directed work managing multiple competing responsibilities and deadlines
The AADHum Initiative, generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, brings African American studies and digital humanities together in order to support scholars and expand upon both fields, making the digital humanities more inclusive of African American history and culture and enriching African American studies research with digital methods, archives, and tools.
The initiative draws on the remarkable faculty, staff, and centers—in the College of Arts and Humanities and across the University of Maryland—with internationally recognized expertise in the digital humanities and in African American literature, history, and culture. Launched in January 2017, AADHum has hosted a robust program of events, digital skills trainings, and workshops, as well as facilitated numerous scholarly talks and reading groups. In October 2018, AADHum was proud to host a national conference that convened scholars and practitioners from across the nation and the globe to share and engage with research that is Intentionally Digital, Intentionally Black.
